I’m celebrating this week that after writing another grant through the Wilson Education Foundation Venture Grant program, our library will be adding 5 more Nooks to our collection for literature circles!

This was truly a team effort involving: the reading specialists and gifted teacher at my school who are collaborating with me on the grant, my principal who found some extra funds to buy covers, and the head of the Wilson Education Foundation who found the Nooks on sale at our local Sears for $69 each, brand-new!  Our school theme this year is “building a great community,” and when projects come together like this, I can’t help but think that we’re definitely on the right track.

As we go into November, I’m finding that I’m already counting my blessings long before Thanksgiving Day.

  • I’m thankful for Beth, my incredible library assistant, without whom the Nook program would have never have gotten started because I’d be too busy shelving books to think about and create it.  Her service to our school and our students is what keeps our library moving forward instead of stagnating.
  • I’m thankful for my principal’s support as I try out new technology and invite students to bring their own devices amidst an almost-fixed teaching schedule.
  • I’m thankful for the  Home School Association and the parent members who instill a love of reading into their children.  So much so that they work hours and hours to put on a book fair at our school this week.  As we set up, I’m having conversations with them about how ereaders and ebooks affects their children’s lives and education.  It’s fascinating!

I could go on and on, of course, but this is not the time or place for a lengthy gush.  I’m only hoping that I can encourage my fellow professionals to try to look on the bright side of things as we finish our first quarter of the school year.  Even with all the stress of report cards and assessments, what do you have to be thankful for?
